Programs for Persons Who Need Long Term Care (LTC)
Today, many Iowans continue to receive LTC (long term care) services in a facility such as a nursing home. Around 450 nursing homes are certified by Medicaid to provide care for frail, elderly, and disabled Iowans of all ages. Please click on Long Term Care to learn more about:

In the past, receiving long term care in a facility like a nursing home was people's only choice. That changed in the 1970s when a young Iowa girl and her parents fought for the child's right to receive long term care through Medicaid -- but in her own home, not in a hospital.
A waiver granted to the family made it possible for the girl to receive treatment at home. This started a movement across the nation toward Home and Community Based Services (HCBS).
Today, many Iowans receive the health care services they need in their own homes or communities through the waiver programs. Iowa continues to be a leader and pioneer in this area.
